No sinner has ever made Christ Lord or Savior.

Find me a verse that invites the sinner to make Christ “Lord.” After you find that one (you’ll be looking until the day you leave this earth), find me a verse that invites the sinner to make Christ “Savior.” Hint-you’ll spend the rest of your days looking for that one too.

The truth is, no sinner has EVER made Christ “Lord” or “Savior.” The reason for this is because Christ’s rightful status as both “Savior” and “Lord” is in no way dependent on any sinner, or anything a sinner does.

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:9-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God is the one who highly exalted Christ, and given Him the name that is above every name. God did that, not man.

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;”Colossians‬ ‭1:16-19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Christ created all things, and they all exist FOR Him. He holds all things together. He has PREEMINENCE in all things.

Christ is Lord-period. He is Lord because He is God. No one makes Christ “Lord.” It is delusional arrogance to think that one, through some sort of half-hearted promise to do better has made Christ “Lord” or “Savior.” Those roles are aspects of who He is, not what man makes Him. Man doesn’t make Christ anything. Christ is who He is by His very nature.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”‭‭John‬ ‭1:1-3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Christ is God. He existed as God and with the Father before time and matter were created. He is, intrinsically and completely Lord. This is a subject that could never be exhausted. Even if every human who has ever existed spent every moment of their life studying about the Lordship of Christ, that subject could never be exhausted, because Christ as both Lord and God is infinite. He is almighty God.

The same can be said about making Christ “Savior” by merit of some decision. Christ is the Savior of His people because He came to earth and did what was necessary to actually save them. It was He who reconciled the elect sinner back to God.

“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:”‭Colossians‬ ‭1:20-22‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Salvation is a work wrought by Christ for His people. His people were dead before God made them alive. It was Christ who saved them by Himself and for His own glory.

“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”‭Colossians‬ ‭2:13-14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The elect sinner hasn’t made Christ their Savior. Christ is the Savior of the elect because that is what God, from eternity past, decreed. “So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.”‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5:5-6, 9-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Christ’s status as both Lord and Savior are intrinsic to His Godhood. It has never been dependent on the sinner’s assent.

I meet people all the time who think they made Christ Lord because they made a promise to do better. I’m not sure that is anything short of blasphemy. Man doesn’t influence the nature of God in any way, shape, or form. Man is at the mercy of God.

Jesus is Lord over all, the elect sinner and the non-elect sinner. But He is only Savior to His chosen people. And nothing that they do influences or contributes or nominates Him to His rightful position. He chose His own people, and through a covenant with God is their Savior, Lord, and High Priest forever.

Every elect sinner recognizes Christ as both Lord and Savior, and that is a result of the regeneration of the Holy Spirit, not as a condition to meet prior to salvation. The elect sinner is humbled before God and made to submit to His righteousness. The elect sinner does nothing for, or to God and praise God for that. To Him all glory and praise is due. To Him is all dominion and power forever and ever.
