Arminians, Tolerant Calvinists, and Lordshippers call God a liar
“Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.”1 John 5:10 ESV
This is one of my favorite passages of scripture, and I have written about it in the past as well as citing it often in many online forums. I love it because it tells us that the testimony of God concerning Christ is singular and objective.
Today I’ll be dealing with the second part of the verse regarding those who do not believe the testimony of God. In the proclamation of the gospel, one will certainly meet those who claim that there are “believers” who do not believe the objective and singular testimony of God. This claim is a contradiction of the highest levels. It usually arises as a defense to ignorance-tolerant Calvinists and Lordshippers will say that Arminians are brethren who are merely ignorant or immature, or in some cases “not yet ready to hear the truth concerning how salvation works.” Others, like Arminians, will say that the true gospel is a lie, claiming that to claim that God only loves some and only sent Christ to die for some is a lie. Arminians outright reject the gospel, or spin it to fit their satanic lie.
Clearly we have an issue here, especially in light of the text cited above. The Apostle John makes it clear that “whoever” does not believe God has made Him a liar, BECAUSE he has not believed THE testimony of God concerning Christ. The term “whoever” does not allow for exceptions to what John is saying regarding those who believe. The definite article “the” indicates that there is ONE testimony that God has given concerning Christ.
To rightly be called a “believer,” one MUST believe what God has said about His Son. What has God said about His Son? Let’s take a quick look-
“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE from THEIR sins.” All this took place to FULFILLwhat the Lord had SPOKEN by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).”Matthew 1:21-23 ESV
The Holy Spirit told Mary to name her firstborn child “Jesus” BECAUSE He would save His people from their sins. From the beginning we see that Jesus was to accomplish a specific thing (salvation from sin) for a specific people (His people).
“For OUR sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
God imputed the sins of the elect to Christ, and Christ bore those specific sins on the cross as a substitute for His elect.
“In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.”Colossians 2:11-14 ESV
The death of Christ on the cross set aside the record of debt that was against the elect. Because of that debt satisfaction, God is just in forgiving all of the sins of His elect people. Further, He is just in imputing to them the alien righteousness of Jesus Christ.
“For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”Hebrews 10:14 ESV
The death of Christ did EVERYTHING required to bring the elect of God to glory.
Do Arminians believe this message? The short answer is no. They believe that Christ died for all men, and that there is now something for them to do to effectuate the sacrifice of Christ. This is a denial of the plain text of scripture, and in light of the 1 John 5:10 text, it means that they do not believe the testimony of God, meaning that they call Him a liar. They do this every moment of every day as they rely on their actions/beliefs to save them, and as they spread their satanic lies to those around them.
Do Lordshippers believe this message? The short answer is no. Lordshippers believe that the arminian “gospel” plus their alleged commitment to obedience is how one can have assurance of salvation. For the Lordshipper, believing God (which they do not) is not enough, in contradiction to the 1 John 5:10 text. One must also be working to ensure that God will save them. Their view comes from a perverted understanding of James 2 and Romans 8 among other texts. Lordshippers also call God a liar because they call into question the sufficiency of the work of Christ to save His people. They say Jesus may have died for your sins, but unless you’re making your best effort to get better, then you won’t be saved. This is works righteousness heresy and a denial of the testimony of God.
Do tolerant Calvinists believe this message? The short answer is no. Why? Because they view the satanic Arminian message as a viable gospel. In their defense of Arminians as brethren, they call God a liar by suggesting that God does not teach all of His people the same gospel, and that God uses falsehood to save some of His people. They repeatedly deny the text of John 6:45, which states that God teaches ALL of His people the gospel, and that is why they come to Christ. Tolerant Calvinists might as well have a tattoo on their foreheads that says “God is a liar, or is utterly incompetent because He doesn’t teach all of His people the same thing.”
For those of you who are believers (those who do believe the testimony of God concerning Christ-do not be fooled by these liars. In spite of the name calling, the mockery, the rejection and the hatred, do not fall into the trap of accepting the claim that God does not teach all of His people the same truth concerning His Son. Do not capitulate to the pressure to accept those who call God a liar as brethren. And trust me, if you are a believer of the truth, you will run into this.
There is no innocent ignorance of the truth according to John in 1 John 5:10. There is only one gospel. God only uses that one gospel to save His people. God teaches the exact same gospel to all of His people, and thus all of God’s people believe the exact same gospel. God is all powerful, and His sovereignty extends to thoughts of men. Nothing is outside of the sovereignty of God. Thus, a saving knowledge of the truth is NOT dependent on the ability, the intellect, or the will of the individual. God causes all of His people to believe the same gospel. If you believe the truth, it is because God in His sovereignty taught you that truth. If you do not believe the truth, then you have called God a liar. Your “ignorance” of the gospel is not innocent, it is an affront to the Almighty God.
